I've been playing D&D since I was a kid, and I've been a Dungeon Master for over 25 years. I've also spent many years independently publishing tabletop RPGs and solo adventures for 5e.
One thing I've always loved about tabletop RPGs is how deeply you can get immersed in a fantasy world. The little details, the unexpected encounters, the journey between destinations, and the feeling that there's a whole world out there waiting to be explored. I wanted to create a solo experience that captured that feeling, something I could sit down with and get completely lost in.
I wanted to make something more tangible than a book full of tables and prompts. So I designed a physical map with 91 slots, little pegged pieces to mark your hero, towns, and dungeons, and a collection of stencils you can use to draw out encounters and explore dungeons in your journal.
The map is laid out like a giant game of Battleship. You start in a town, pick up quests, gather supplies, and set off into the wilderness. Every square on the map has its own entry in the adventure book, with terrain descriptions, special features, opportunities to hunt or gather, and the possibility of encountering monsters, strangers, or something much more dangerous.
As you travel, you mark your progress on the map, discover dungeons, meet people, and make decisions that shape your adventure. Your choices can affect the five factions competing for influence across Aldearia, and the quests you pursue can change how the story unfolds. Meanwhile, other events may be moving forward in the background. A dragon might be closing in on a settlement, or a lich might be building an army while you're off exploring somewhere else.
When combat breaks out, you use the stencils to draw a battle map in your journal, sketch in the characters and monsters, and play out the encounter with your usual 5e rules.
I designed the whole thing around the feeling of sitting down at a table with a map, a notebook, some dice, and a world to explore. It's a solo game first, but you can also play it with friends. You don't need a Dungeon Master to run it for you.
The funny thing is, I originally made this just for myself. I shared a picture of the setup on Reddit, and people started asking where they could get one. The game wasn't even finished yet, but there were already people who wanted to play it.
So I decided to see if there was enough interest to make a proper release.
That's what this Kickstarter is for. I've put a lot of time into designing the game, its map, the stencils, and the adventure system, and now I'd like to make it available to other people who want to explore Aldearia.
I'm keeping this first campaign small and manageable. The goal is to fund the initial release, with options ranging from print-and-play files to the actual 3D-printed map, game pieces, and stencils. The physical sets will be made by me, with limited quantities available.
I'm just one person making something I love, and that's part of what makes this project possible. I want to make a game that feels personal, that invites you to pick up a pencil and get lost in another world, and that gives you a reason to come back to the table for one more day of adventure.
If that sounds like your kind of game, I'd love for you to join me in bringing Legends of Aldearia to life.
